Paving is the process of applying a durable surface to an area intended to sustain traffic, which can be either vehicular traffic or foot traffic. The most common modern paving materials are asphalt and concrete. In the past, brick was extensively used, as was metal. Today, permeable paving methods are beginning to be used more for low-impact roadways and walkways. Another form of paving material is pavers, generally in the form of pre-cast concrete blocks. Pavers are sometimes used for aesthetic purposes. Many years ago, brick, cobblestone and wood plank pavements were common in cities. However, they have high manual labor requirements, so they are only maintained today for historical reasons.
